Identity

Who am I? Am I loved? Am I important? These are all questions a little girls asks when she enters the world. These desires for love and self-worth are at the very center of her heart (Ransomed Heart Ministries). She first goes to her parents, then friends and other important adult figures and then eventually to a love interest to tell her who she is and whether she has value. Unfortunately, this is a world full of broken people who don’t know who they are and whether they have value, and there is an enemy who wants to use them to tell us we are unimportant and undeserving of love. Satan’s “purpose is to steal and kill and destroy,” ( John 10: 10). He wants to steal our true identity, kill our hearts, and destroy our self-image. He whispers lies to us about who we are and use the people around us and the hard things we go through to make them feel true. Luckily, all the hurtful things that Satan has told us are all lies. In fact the Bible tells us that “there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies,” ( John 8: 44). So who can tell us who we are?
God, our heavenly father, is the only one who truly and fully knows us. He created us in his own, perfect image ( Genesis 2: 27). We have to go to him to tell us who we are. In the book of Psalms, King David wrote to the lord:
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous- how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
As I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them;
They outnumber the grains of sand!” ( Psalm 139: 13 - 18).
God knows everything we have and will do. He knew us before he knit us together in our mother’s womb and he loves us. He loves us more than we can even comprehend. He loves every part about us. He delights in us. He says to us, “You are beautiful, my darling, beautiful beyond words. Your eyes are like doves behind your veil. Your hair falls in waves, like a flock of goats winding down the slopes of Gilead,” (Song or Songs 4: 1). We are daughters of the one true king. We are valuable and beautiful beyond words, both inside and out, and created in the very image of God. However, sometimes we do not believe it. We have listened to the lies of Satan and the world around us our whole lives and let them shape our self-image. We have to break the agreements we have made with Satan and replace them with God’s truth. Because of what he did for us on the cross, Jesus has given us eternity to break agreements with Satan through his name, ( John 16: 23). We have to choose to believe what God says about us. He is the only one who can truly fill the deepest desires of our femanine hearts.
