He Has Risen

He did it! It is finished! Christ has risen from the dead, and he wants us to rise with him. He calls us to life from the darkest, most broken parts of our lives. This time of the year, when the winter in coming to an end and springtime is here, always reminds me of Jesus rising from the grave. Flowers are blossoming, eggs are hatching, and the son is rising. New life is springing up everywhere.

Last weekend as I was spending time in worship with God, he told me that he was going to set me free from the sin and other things that I had been struggling with for a large portion of my life. Some of these things are daydreaming and shame. I know that it might sound strange to say that daydreaming is a sin, but I had been using it as an escape from my life and problems for so many years that it was over taking my life and keeping me from being able to enjoy it. This weekend I have been the most free from daydreaming and shame that I ever have been before.

In 2 Corinthians the Apostle Paul said, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old is gone and the new has come!” ( 2 Corinthians 5: 17). When we become followers of Christ, he not only forgives our sins, but he makes us new. So many Christians think that it stops with forgiveness and a ticket to heaven. However, that is just the beginning. Stopping there would be like finding an Easter egg, but refusing to open it and eat the candy on the inside. Christ didn’t just die to that we could be forgiven and then move on with our lives the same way we did before; as if nothing had changed. Forgiveness is just a front cover! He wants to set us free! It begins with laying down our lives and the sin and broken places in our lives that we like to hide and asking him to make us new. It probably won’t happen all at once. In fact, we won’t be completely free from our sin until we reach heaven, but each day after we ask him to intervene, we’ll find ourselves at least a little more free than the day before. There is a point when you start to see sins that used to control your life are no longer even a temptation for you.
