Be Still and Know

Often when I am caught in the middle of the craziness of my day to day life I forget to take time to focus myself on Christ. I let worries about school, friends, and everyday problems steal my peace and distract me from God’s truth. I worry about things like having enough time to do my homework or what my classmates think of me. I don’t like having to sit alone with my own thoughts because it will give me time to worry. And I think that if we are honest, most people would say that they feel the same way. We like to be busy. We rush from place to place, activity to activity, to keep us from being able to have time to think. Why? Because we don’t know what to do with the problems we’ve worked so hard to forget, the worries we’ve pushed to the back of our minds, and the heavy burdens that we carry. So who can we run to?

In the Bible the Apostle Paul said, “Don’t worry about anything, instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus”

( Philippians 4: 6 - 7). God tells us to run to him when we are overwhelmed with the stress of this world and give our worries to him. We can pray about anything. He is the one who can give us the peace and strength to get us through the day.

In the gospel of Luke, “as Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, ‘Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.’

But the Lord said to her, ‘My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken from her”’ ( Luke 10: 38 - 42). Mary had discovered the peace and security that comes from sitting still in God’s presence and listening to him and letting him speak truth into her life, but Martha was too busy and distracted to be still and listen. Just like Martha, we often get so caught up in trying to get from point A to point B that we forget to take time to spend time with God.

In the book of Psalms it says, “Be still and know that I am God” ( Psalm 46: 10). He is the one who gives us our hope and strength to make it through the day. We need to remind ourselves what God says about us and our lives by reading the Bible. God wants to spend time with us. All we have to do is seek him. He is always listening.
