The Savior of The World

When you walk the hallway of a high school or look around a busy store, you can see so much pain and suffering. So many people leading broken lives looking desperately for something for to give them some sort of hope. They look every where they can for something that can give them purpose and make them happy. We look to relationships and success to tell us if they are loved and accepted. Many even resort to sex and drugs, desperate to find something worth living for. However, we all at one point or another in our lives discover that there is nothing in this life that can fill that need for hope and purpose. This is what leads to depression and anxiety, and some times even suicide. We all know what it feels like to reach the end of our rope. To feel as if there is nothing in this life worth living for, but who do we turn to for help? Who can give us the hope and love that we so desperately need?

Jesus is the only one who can give us that. God saw us suffering down on Earth from the weight of our sin. We could not come to him so he came down to us in the form of a infant. In the Bible it says that, “God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, ‘Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!’

“Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary,’ the angel told her, ‘for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his kingdom will never end!’

“Mary asked the angel, ‘But how can this happen? I am a virgin.’

“The angel replied, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and he will be called the Son of God,’” ( Luke 1: 26 - 35).

Jesus came in the most humble way possible. He could have come down from heaven riding a great chariot with trumpets sounding and thousands of powerful angels at his side proclaiming his name, but instead he was born in a manger. He wasn’t even born in a palace or into a wealthy or powerful family. He was born in a barn and layed in a food trough that was used to feed animals. What’s more, Mary, his mother, was very poor and she was not married. Most people would probably not have believed that she had conceived without having sex, so they would have looked down on her. Having sex outside of marriage back then was considered very shameful in Hebrew culture. People were even stoned for it. Because they looked down on his mother, they most likely would have looked down on Jesus.

Not only did Jesus not have to came to Earth to save us from our sins in such a humble way, but he didn’t even have to came to save us at all. He could have left us to deal with the consequences of our sin, but he didn’t. Why? Because he loves us. Jesus said, “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that who ever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life,” ( John 3: 16). None of us deserve what he did for us, but he did it anyway. We can’t buy it or earn it. He gave it to us as a gift of grace. The first and greatest Christmas present. It’s never too late and you’re never too far from him to receive it. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done. In the book of Romans the Apostle Paul said that, “nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord,” ( Romans 8: 39). God can change your life. All you have to do is give it to him, and he will give you the hope, joy, and love that you so desperately need.
