Taking Every Thought Captive

For most of my life I have let my thoughts run wild. I would accept and entertain any thought that tried to pass through, good or bad. I let my emotions rule my life. Some of these emotions were jealousy and fear. Ever since I started first grade at 6 years old, fear has been a constant battle for me. I am usually a very shy person and don’t like to take risks. Jealousy has also followed me for a very long time because of my insecurities that came from my struggles in school. I would see my brother and all my friends with all their talents and wish I could have their life. I wanted to be smart and successful like them. I let jealousy and fear consume my life.

These thought patterns led to depression. I let myself sink in sadness and despair. Then when I was 14 God began to show me that I don’t have to let my thoughts and emotions lead my life. He showed me how to control my thought patterns.
In the Bible the Apostle Paul tells us to “take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ,” (Corinthians 10: 5). In other words, we need to take control of our thoughts and make them align with God’s truth (The Bible). When a bad thought tries to enter your mind, cut it off and choose to remind yourself what the Bibles has to say about whatever you are struggling with. Ask yourself: “how would Jesus handle this situation?” Every emotion starts with a thought or an agreement you have made with Satan.
Sometime we don’t even realize at first when we have made an agreement. I’ll often notice that I am feeling depressed, but I’m not sure what thought led to my feelings. When this happens, I ask God to help me identify that lie that I have agreed with and then I trace my thought pattern all the way back to when I first started feeling depressed. Once I identify what the lie is, I break the agreement and remind myself what God has to say about the situation.
In the book of John in the Bible, it says that “the truth (God’s word) will set you free,” (John 8:32). We will experience God’s joy and peace when we choose to live in his truth. We can do this by reading the Bible and spending time with God everyday. We have to choose to believe what God says. The only way that we can really learn to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ is by practice. Every time thoughts that are not in line with God’s truth tries to enter your mind, choose to push it out and replace it with the truth. At first it might feel impossible, but after awhile you’ll barely have to think about it. It’s not always so easy but it’s worth it. Letting your thoughts go where ever they want is easier, but in the end it never leads you to a good place. You have to choose to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.
