What is Dyslexia? Many people would say that it is a disability that causes people to write numbers and letters backwards and struggle with reading and spelling. Yes, all of these things are a part of Dyslexia, but it is not quite that simple. In fact, there are many ups and downs to having dyslexia.
For most of my life I did not know that their was positive benefits to dyslexia. As a small child I found reading, spelling, and math very difficult because of my dyslexia and ADHD. This made me think that I wasn’t as smart and as talented as my friends and classmates. People always told me that my ADHD made me more creative, but I didn’t think that there were advantages to having dyslexia. The truth is that dyslexia has many ups and downs.

People with dyslexia are very creative. There are many famous music artists with dyslexia. For example, Mark Hall, a member of a Christian band called Casting Crowns, has dyslexia. Music and songwriting takes a lot of imagination that not everyone has.
Dyslexics are good problem solvers. They know how to think outside the box. People are not sure if they are just born that way or if they learn from trying to make it through school. My mom once said that learning to read is like walking through a field of daisies. The difference between most children’s field and a child with dyslexia’s field is that the one with dyslexia has a mountain standing in the middle of their field. It is very hard for children with dyslexia to learn how to read because they have to find a way of learning how to read that fits their unique learning style. Doing this requires great perceptiveness, hard work, and thought.
Dyslexia is very complicated and has many ups and downs. Many people consider it a learning disability, but that is not completely fair because it is just as enabling as disabling.
